Below is our trip, which will be explained in the finest detail. This will be handy for anyone else planning a similar expedition; a great deal of time has been spent on it and a great deal will be spent as the page will constantly change.

Images and video clips of our journey will be included in our diary whenever possible!

Who knows what we might see; ocean coastline, lush forests, high desert, mountain passes, snow-capped peaks, sweeping vistas, expansive plains, fertile farmlands, rolling hills, and wide rivers, it brings water to my mouth just thinking about it!

Overview of Route

= Our Last Location / = Places we've stopped or route sections

Note: The above map will be updated whenever we get off the bikes and find ourselves infront of a computer! Use the map controls to zoom in/out, scroll and swap to satellite imagery so you can check out the terrain in a bit more detail!

The bulk of our trip will be following Adventure Cycling's Transamerica trail but we have made certain alterations in order for us to visit places of interest. The main route adjustment we have made is making sure we get to go through the Grand Canyon, The western tier is pretty rough in terms of wilderness and we will need to triple up on water supplies.

Click here for a background on the Transamerica trail.

1. Starting in Yorktown VA headed to Ashland VA
We have decided to begin the Journey on the Transamerica trail in Yorktown VA.

2. Ashland VA to Christiansburg VA - 220 Miles

3. Christiansburg VA to Berea KY - 320 Miles
The journey to Berea, Kentucky will be a challenging time, with some of the steepest climbing on the whole trip. The Virginia portion of the route, surprisingly, has more total elevation gain than any other state.

4. Berea KY to Murphysboro IL - 360 Miles
This section should be a bit flatter, but it will be smoulderingly hot so we will need to watch out for that.

5. Murphysboro IL to Hartford IL - 110 Miles

6. Hartford IL to Council Bluffs IA - 438 Miles

7. Council Bluffs IA - Pierre SD - 420 Miles

8. Pierre SD - Girard, KS - 420 Miles
Half Way Point.

9. Girard, KS - Alexander, KS - 310 Miles

10. Alexander, KS - Pueblo CO - 330 Miles

Change to the Western Express:

12. Pueblo CO - Dolores CO - 350 Miles

13. Dolores CO - Cedar City UT - 411 Miles
A long... hot... baron stretch.

14. Cedar City UT - Fallon NV - 490 Miles
Another long, beautiful and largely uninhabited section. The picture below pretty much sums it up!

14. Fallon NV - San Francisco CA - 300 miles

15. San Francisco CA - Santa Barbara CA - 350 Miles
A beautiful seaside stretch.

16. Santa Barbara CA - Los Angeles CA - 96 Miles
